Keeping the Kitchen Fresh
Since I abhor the thought of sour dishcloths and germy sponges in my kitchen, I've worked out a little system that works great for me. Instead of a sponge, I have this scrub brush:
It has a scraper on one side, and works great for loosening dried food or pre-scrubbing dishes before sticking them in the dishwasher. The best part? I've had this thing since we were married (four years ago) and haven't needed to replace it yet! I simply stick it in the silverware compartment EVERY time I run the dishwasher and it comes out fresh and clean-smelling. When not in the dishwasher, it lives in the stainless steel holder pictured.
As for the dishcloth I use to handwash dishes and wipe the counters, I always replace it every single morning with a fresh one. I have a mini "laundry basket" under my kitchen sink to collect the used dishclothes until laundry day:

I love your little laundry basket! I usually make a trip out to the laundry room each night LOL What a waste of steps! Thanks for the good idea :D
That basket IS a great idea. I'm so going to do that after my move.
I have the dish scraper too. It's great - and the dishwasher safe? Awesome!
one day when I have an electric dishwasher (my DH is the dishwasher currently ;)) I will buy me a brush and wash it in the dishwasher. :) Good ideas!
I use both a sponge and a brush - but I read once to put the sponge in the dishwasher as well because it sterilizes it. I simply toss it into every load of dishes - and comes out clean. I love the idea of the basket under the sink...I'll definately be trying that myself! Thanks :)

How can you live without the dish sponge? I have an assortment of brushes (bottle ones etc.) and I keep them in a ceramic vase next to the sink. I use rags ( I serge up some terrycloth rags) and they pile up in a bucket in the laundry room. Good I idea about the basket under the sink (that's where I keep all my clean rags).
What's your favorite dishwasher soap by the way?? I've been trying different ones.
Like Valerie, I make a trip to the laundry room each morning, I like your idea of a small laundry basket for the wash cloths. I also get fresh towels every day as well.
I do use a sponge but make sure it can air dry and then run it through my dishwasher every time I run it.
I see your canisters in your dish drainer-and you're right, they look just like mine! (o;
i can see that you are anal retentive. just like me.
Regarding your comments on the feminism thread at True Womanhood...
Yes, yes, yes. I absolutely agree with everything you've expressed there, and I'm very thankful you spent the time intelligently expressing yourself, because you've put into words things I've been trying to say recently but haven't been able to clearly articulate.
If I can get my thoughts together better, I'll post in more detail over there.
great idea....thanks
The basket is a wonderful idea! My old dishrags always sit around on the counter waiting to be taken downstairs...
